The Other Mascots: Forgotten Spirits

The spirit of Slippery Rock did not begin with Rocky. There have been two other forgotten spirits that brought energy and even hope to the Slippery Rock community.

During World War II, Coach N. Kerr Thompson was determined to keep Slippery Rock involved in intercollegiate sports. To keep morale up, Coach Thompson introduced a little black and white dog named “Spot” as the mascot in 1942. Rocket Man consisted of a shirt, cape, and mask and appeared on and off for 15 years before disappearing. It debuted in 1949.
